The Sherbro Island Project (based in Bonthe Town, Sherbro Island) is a pioneering project of compassion. The project aims to help address the unacceptable level of poverty and its repercussions that continue to affect the most vulnerable and underprivileged groups, such as the Sherbro Islanders, in Sierra Leone. We aim to serve every vulnerable and less privileged community, specifically in Sierra Leone; it is a project with no boundaries; it has no regard for ethnicity, tribe, religion, gender and disability

How can we address these issues?

We rely on volunteers and donors to help us implement the work we do. More than ever before, education is vital to a country’s development. A country with a high number of children dropping out of school will face significant challenges in progressing.

Education provides the world with remarkable benefits—mobile phones, airplanes, antibiotics, to name a few. It also helps us understand the technologies that surround us. The more we understand, the better we can apply this knowledge to benefit both individuals and society as a whole.

Why Education Matters

There is an undeniable connection between education and national development. A solid foundation at the primary level creates:
• Critical thinkers and problem solvers
• Empowered future leaders
• Economically independent citizens
• Stronger, more resilient communities

Our Mission

Recognising this, we have taken a bold step in bridging the educational gap by establishing a free private school—specifically for children from deprived backgrounds—ensuring they receive the opportunities they deserve.

This means:
• Free, quality education for all children, regardless of their background.
• Greater access to learning resources, including textbooks, libraries, and modern teaching tools.
• Dedicated, professional teachers who are committed to nurturing young minds and inspiring a love for learning.
• A safe, supportive environment where children can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
But our work is far from over.

With a strong focus on supporting the underprivileged, we are committed to helping children stay in school by:

Running after-school and weekend classes

Raising awareness of the challenges faced by single parents from low-income backgrounds and their children

Providing counseling and mentoring services

Supporting individuals with disabilities to participate in all relevant and appropriate activities
